Every year, we host a pumpkin carving party. This year, the party got a bit bigger and louder. But as always, it was fun. Scott Johnson, the Master of the Pumpkin, who earned his title through the glory of his pumpkin last year, was soundly beaten by the new Master of the Pumpkin, Barbie Csider. It was an easy, and clear victory, as Scott disappointed his expectant fans with a weak rendering of "#5" that more closely resembled a game of Tic-Tac-Toe with a squiggle on the end. Apparently, Scott decided the significance of the "5" as his apartment number, was more appropriate than an actual good decoration. Lest anyone think I am unfairly diminishing the value of Scott's pumpkin, I have posted pictures below. Barbie's pumpkin, on the contrary, was a glowing (literally) masterpiece. Her rendition of the "Cat in the Hat" was flawless and executed with precision. And, in case that did not prove her worth as victorious Master of the Pumpkin, she added a back-up, but no-less-perfect carving of the "FedEx" logo.
We did have other pumpkins at the party, the state of Texas was carved by Matt Rehrer, and much to the surprise of his observers, he pulled it off fairly well. Additionally, there was the usual simple triangular-eyed creation of Mark Wenslawski, and the "'A' for effort" pumpkins that did not achieve lasting impressions. Megan Gerdts came in second, with a notably worthy effort: her pumpkin embodying the mores of Halloweens bygone and future.
And of course, those who were adorned in costume were a hoot. The "cute" contingent was well-represented by a "Cookie Monster," a chef, our own little "lion of Judah" (note that "lion" is not capitalized), a butterfly, a pumpkin, an angel, a Hollywood starlet, a Star Wars character, among others. Enjoy pictures below.
